The History of Recipes
We are able to track the history of written recipes way back into ancient history, certainly as far back into recorded history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and possibly even further than that. In practice though, generally, these early records were just very basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing food.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe in existence, according to Professor Solomon Katz, is a series of stone tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel `blissful`. As we move on, we have a couple of recipe books published in the 14th Century : one book called `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, these two books are not about the indian curry that is familiar to us all today, but rather recipes for the types of food on the menues of the rich people of that time. During the following few hundred years, the wealthy families of Europe competed to serve the most extravagent banquests, and as a consequence, cooks and their collection of recipes were highly sought after. Notwithstanding that, it was during the nineteenth century that cookery and recipe collections became really popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated years of their lives to assembling, testing, and recording recipes of the day. By the advent of the 20th century, recipe books were highly popular as a result of more people being able to read, more free time and being a little richer. The revolution that is television brought us TV cooks and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing us all to search through thousands of recipes just like those on this web site. |
