The History of Recipes
Food historians have proved the existance of recipes way back into history, in fact as far into history as pharonic Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. In practice though, these, ancient cook books were just very basic pictorial instructions for meal preparation.
Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to experts are a few tablets in the Sumerian language which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel wonderful. As our culinary historical trip moves on a few more years there were some interesting books which were published in the fourteenth century : a recipe book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, these books have no connection with the curry that is familiar to us all today, but instead recipes for the types of food on the menus of the rich people of that period. In the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought back a variety of foods and spices from the holy land, including spices like basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new culinary ideas caused an explosion in publications on food, most of which are now in private libraries. Over the following few hundred years, the rich and powerful families of Europe strove to offer the most extravagent meals, and consequentially the best chefs and their collection of recipes became highly prized. However, it wasn`t until the 19th century that fine cookery and recipe books rose to prominence. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, spent years to assembling, verifying, and recording recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy. By the arrival of the 20th century, cookery publications are greatly in demand as a result of better eduction, people having increased spare time and disposable income. Like it or not, the introduction of television brings us TV chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everybody to access massive numbers of recipes just like those on the site you are now reading. |
