The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to trace the history of recipes way back into ancient history, certainly as far back into recorded history as pharonic Egypt, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that maybe, these, early cook books were just very basic hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
In fact, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to historians are some tablets in the Sumerian language which describe the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel `wonderful`. Later on, in The time of the romans around 25BC a man called Apicius assembled a number of scripts which described recipes prepared by the Romans. In his works, Apicius tells us how the meals were divided into hors d`oeuvres, main course and desserts, a style of dining still practiced today. This early Roman chef informs us how the ancient Romans used a good variety of aromatic flavors, including many that are still in use today like thyme, rue and asafoetida. Later, there are two interesting cookery books which were published in the 1300s : one book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these books are not about the indian curry that is popular today, but instead descriptions of the types of food on the menues of the rich and wealthy people of those days. Later on in the 1400s, the Crusaders brought back many new foods and herbs from the holy lands, including spices such as basil and rosemary. These new spices and herbs created an increase in books on cookery, many of which are kept safe in private collections. The arrival of television brought us celebrity chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of the internet, permitting everyone to access thousands of recipes such as those found on sites such as this. |
