The History of Recipes
Written recipes as an idea can be observed way back into antiquity, at least as far into history as pharonic Egypt, and possibly even further than that. In practice though, in the main part, these old cookbooks were just very simple hieroglyphic recipes for food preparation.
In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to academics are some stone tablets in the Sumerian language which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel wonderful. Continuing our culinary historical journey, there were some recipe books published in the 14th Century ; a cookery book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, these books are unconnected to the spicy food that is popular today, but rather recipes for the types of food cooked for the rich people of those days. Later on, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought us many foods and spices from Arab cuisine, such as basil and coriander. The introduction of these new tastes caused an eruption in cookery books, many of which still exist in private collections. Over the succeeding few hundred years, the rich and powerful families of Wesstern Europe competed to offer the most extravagent banquests, and because of this cooks and their recipe collections were at a premium. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the 19th century the formal cooking and recipe collections became really popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted much of their lives to assembling, testing, and recording recipes common in their social group. The TV revolution brings us TV cookery programs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everybody to access massive numbers of recipes just like those on this web site. |
