The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to trace the history of written cooking instructions back into the distant past, at least as far back into history as early Egypt, and maybe further still. In practice though, generally, these early records were just primitive pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.
Interestingly, the oldest recipe found, according to experts in ancient history is a series of clay tablets in Sumerian which describe the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel blissful. Closer to modern times, there are some recipe books which appeared in the 14th Century ; a book called `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, these are nothing to do with the spicy food that we all know today, but instead recipes for the types of meals prepared for the rich and powerful. Later, in the 15th century, the Crusaders brought back many foods and herbs from the East, including rosemary and coriander. These new culinary innovations prompted a surge in books on cooking, the majority of which are kept safe in private libraries. During the next few hundred years, the powerful families of Wesstern Europe competed with each other to offer the most exotic meals, and as a result the best cooks and their recipe collections increased in prestige. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the 1800s the formal cooking and cookery books reached a high level of popularity. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to assembling, testing, and recording recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. Like it or not, the introduction of TV brought us TV cookery programs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting us all to access thousands of recipes just like those on this recipe site. |
