The History of Recipes
It is actually possible to trace the history of written recipes far back into antiquity, in truth as far as early Egypt, and maybe further still. Interesting though that is, sadly, these early recipes were just very basic hieroglyphic recipes for food preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to historians are some stone tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel exhilarated. Moving on, we find two interesting cookery books which appeared in the 14th Century ; one book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, these are not about the indian food that we all know today, but instead descriptions of the types of food cooked for the upper classes of that period. In the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought us many foods, spices and herbs from the holy land, including spices such as rosemary and coriander. These new foods and spices led to an explosion in manuscripts on food, some of which still exist in private libraries. Over the following few hundred years, the rich and powerful families of Europe competed with each other to serve up the best banquets, and consequentially chefs and their recipe collections were greatly in demand. Nevertheless, it was during the 19th century that formal cookery and recipe publications became really popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to collating, trying out, and writing down popular recipes of the day. The introduction of the TV gave us TV chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing us all to access massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on this site. |
