The History of Recipes
It is possible to follow the history of meal recipes back into ancient history, at least as far back as the early Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. Having said that, in the main part, these old cookbooks were just basic pictorial instructions for food preparation.
Later on, in The time of the romans around 25BC a man called Apicius created some documents detailing recipes cooked by wealthy roman citizens. In his publication, Apicius recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into appetizers, main meal and afters, a style of dining still practiced today. Aspicius also tells us how the ancient chefs made use of many different spices, including some familiar names such as basil, mint and asafoetida. Later on in the 1400s, knights returning from the crusades brought back many spices and herbs from Arab cooking, including spices like parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new foods and spices created an eruption in cookery books, many of which are now in private cookery archives. By the time we get to the 20th century, cooking publications were in great demand, mostly due to more people being able to read, people having increased spare time and disposable income. |
