The History of Recipes
Transcribed cooking instructions as an idea can be tracked back into history, at least as far back into history as pharonic Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that maybe, these, old records were just very simple hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to experts is a collection of ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel `blissful`. As we move into The time of the romans 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled some scripts which described recipes enjoyed by wealthy roman citizens. He describes how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into hors d`oeuvres, entrees and dessert, a very modern way of dining. Aspicius also describes how the ancient chefs used many aromatic flavours, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens like thyme, fennel and asafoetida. During the succeeding few centuries, the rich and powerful families of the West tried to serve the most exotic banquets, and because of this the best cooks and their recipe collections became highly prized. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the 1800s that fine cookery and cookery books became really popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to collating, trying out, and recording recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. Like it or not, the introduction of TV gave us celebrity chefs and the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting us all to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
We hope you enjoy this Russian Tea Mix recipe.
