The History of Recipes
Recipes as an idea can be tracked far back into antiquity, in fact as far back into history as the ancient Egyptians, and maybe further still. However, in the main part, these old cookbooks were just very basic pictorial recipes for food preparation.
In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to experts are some clay tablets in the Sumerian language which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel blissful and exhilarated. Continuing our culinary historical journey, we find some books which date from the 14th Century - a recipe book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these two books are nothing to do with the indian curry that is popular today, but rather recipes for the types of meals prepared by the chefs of the rich and wealthy people of that period. Over the following few hundred years, the rich and powerful families of Europe competed with each other to serve up the most exotic meals, and as a result cooks and their recipe collections became highly prized. However, it was during the 1800s that cookery and recipe collections really came of age. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to collating, verifying, and recording the recipes of their peers. By the arrival of the 20th century, cookery publications are in great demand, mostly due to increased literacy, more free time and disposable income. The introduction of television brings us TV cookery programs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which brings us neatly up to date and the internet revolution, allowing us all to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on our web site. |
We hope you enjoy this Sangria (Syd) recipe.
