The History of Recipes
Recipes as a concept can be observed far back into distant history, at least as far back into history as the Egyptians, and maybe further still. However, sadly, these early recipes were just simple pictorial recipes for food preparation.
Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe found, according to historians are a few stone tablets in Sumerian which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel blissful and exhilarated. Progressing into The time of the romans 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a few documents describing recipes enjoyed by his fellow Romans. He tells us how the roman meals were divided into appetizers, entrees and afters, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. He also recounts how the Roman cooks used a good variety of herbs and spices, including a few you will know for example bay, mint and dill. In the 15th century, the Crusaders brought back many foods, spices and herbs from the Middle-East, including spices like parsley, basil and rosemary. These new culinary innovations led to an outbreak in manuscripts on cooking, some of which still exist in academic collections. The introduction of television brought us cooking programs and the spin-off recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everyone to access thousands of recipes such as those found on our site. |
We hope you enjoy this Sangria Punch recipe.
