The History of Recipes
Food historians have traced the existance of recipes back into history, certainly as far into history as the early Egyptians, and possibly even further. Interesting though that is, these, ancient cookbooks were just basic hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.
Later on, in Roman times 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a few documents describing recipes cooked by the Romans. In his works, he describes how the roman meals were separated into appetizers, main course and dessert, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Aspicius recounts how the ancient chefs were skilled in the use of many different aromatic flavours, including a few you will know for example thyme, fennel and dill. In the fifteenth century, the Crusaders brought back many foods, spices and herbs from the holy land, including spices such as rosemary and coriander. The introduction of these new culinary ideas created an increase in publications on food, the majority of which are kept safe in private libraries. Like it or not, the introduction of television brought us cooking programs and the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting us all to access massive numbers of recipes like those on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
