The History of Recipes
Academics have tracked the existance of recipes far back into history, certainly as far back into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and quite possibly further than that. In practice though, mostly, these old records were just very simple pictorial instructions for food preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to experts is a collection of tablets in Sumerian which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel wonderful and blissful. As we move on, we find two interesting recipe books which appeared in the 14th Century ; a recipe book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these two books are nothing to do with the spicy food that is familiar to us all today, but rather recipes for the types of food enjoyed by the wealthy. During the next few centuries, the powerful and rich houses tried to serve up the most exotic meals, and because of this the best cooks and their recipe collections became highly prized. Even so, it was during the 1800s that cooking and recipe books really came of age. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to collecting, verifying, and publishing the recipes of their peers. By the advent of the 20th century, cook books were increasing in popularity mostly as a result of higher levels of literacy, people having more spare time and disposable income. |
