The History of Recipes
Historians have tracked the existance of recipes far back into ancient history, in fact as far back as the Egyptians, and maybe further still. However, these, old cookbooks were just very basic pictorial instructions for meal preparation.
Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to experts in ancient history are a few tablets in Sumerian which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel wonderful. As our culinary historical trip moves on a few more years there were some interesting books from the 14th Century - a book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, these books are unconnected to the indian food that is served today, but instead recipes for the types of meals on the tables of the rich people of that period. Over the following few hundred years, the rich and powerful families of the West strove to offer the best banquets, and as a consequence, the best cooks and their recipes increased in prestige. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the 19th century that fine cookery and cookery books became popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted much of their lives to collating, testing, and recording the recipes that were being prepared for the better households. By the arrival of the 20th century, cookery books were greatly in demand due to more people being able to read, more leisure time and a general increase in wealth. The introduction of television gave us TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the internet revolution, allowing us all to access massive numbers of recipes like those on this site. |
