The History of Recipes
It is possible to track the history of written recipes back into ancient history, in fact as far back as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and maybe even further. However, these, ancient records were just simple pictorial instructions for food preparation.
Interestingly, the oldest recipe discovered, according to academics are a few tablets in Sumerian which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel `blissful`. Later on, in Roman times 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled some scripts describing recipes prepared by his fellow Romans. In his works, Apicius recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into hors d`oeuvre, main course and dessert, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Aspicius describes how the ancient Romans were skilled in the use of many herbs and spices, including many that are still in use today for example bay, rue and dill. During the succeeding few hundred years, the rich and powerful families of the West competed with each other to serve up the most exotic meals, and consequentially chefs and their collection of recipes were at a premium. However, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that fine cookery and recipe publications really came of age. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, spent years to collating, verifying, and recording recipes of the day. Like it or not, the introduction of television gave us TV cookery programs and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everyone to access massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on our web site. |
