The History of Recipes

It is possible to follow the history of `recipes` way back into distant history, certainly as far back into history as the Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that is, in the main part, these old records were just basic hieroglyphic recipes for preparing meals.

In fact, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to food historians are some tablets in Sumerian which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel exhilarated.

Later on, in The time of the romans around 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled a collection of documents detailing recipes enjoyed by the Romans. In his works, he describes how the meals of wealthy Romans were divided into appetizers, main course and dessert, something we still use today. This early Roman chef describes how the ancient chefs made use of many spices, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens for example bay, fennel and dill.

Later, there were a couple of recipe books from the 14th Century - a cookery book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these two books are unconnected to the indian food that is familiar to us all today, but instead descriptions of the types of food cooked for the rich and powerful of those days.

Later on in the 1400s, knights returning from the crusades brought back a variety of foods, spices and herbs from Arab cuisine, such as coriander, parsley, and rosemary. These new foods and tastes led to a torrent in recipe manuscripts, many of which are now in academic collections.

By the time we get to the 20th century, cookery publications were highly popular due to higher levels of literacy, people having more free time and having more money to spend.

The arrival of television brings us TV cooks and the spin-off recipe books.

Which brings us neatly up to date and the internet revolution, permitting us all to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on this recipe site.
