The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to prove the history of recipes back into antiquity, in truth as far back into recorded history as the early Egyptians, and maybe further still. Interesting though that maybe, generally, these old recipes were just very simple pictorial recipes for preparing meals.
Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe in existence, according to academics is a collection of tablets in the Sumerian language which describe the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel wonderful. As our culinary historical trip moves to more modern times we have two recipe books from the 1300s ; a cookery book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, these are not about the curry that we all know today, but rather descriptions of the types of food prepared by the cooks of the upper classes of the time. Over the following few centuries, the upper-class families of Wesstern Europe competed to serve up the best banquets, and as a consequence, chefs and their recipe collections were much in demand. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that formal cookery and cookery books really came of age. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, spent years to collecting, trying out, and writing down recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. By the arrival of the twentieth century, cooking books are highly popular due to more people being able to read, increased leisure time and having more disposable income. The introduction of television brings us TV cooks and the spin-off recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing us all to access massive numbers of recipes such as those found on our site. |
