The History of Recipes
It is actually possible to trace the history of recipes far back into distant history, in fact as far back into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and maybe even further. Interesting though that is, in the main part, these old cook books were just very basic pictorial recipes for preparing food.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to experts is a series of ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel `wonderful`. As we move on, we find a couple of books published in the 1300s : a recipe book called `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these books are unconnected to the curry that is popular today, but rather recipes for the types of meals enjoyed by the rich and powerful of that time. During the next few centuries, the powerful and wealthy strove to serve the most extravagent banquests, and consequentially chefs and their collection of recipes became highly prized. However, it wasn`t until the 19th century that formal cookery and recipe collections really came of age. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated years of their lives to collating, verifying, and writing down recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. The revolution that is television gave us TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on our web site. |
