The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to follow the history of transcribed cooking instructions far back into the distant past, in truth as far back as pharonic Egypt, and potentially, even further back. In practice though, these, ancient records were just very simple hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing meals.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to academics is a series of clay tablets in Sumerian which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel blissful and exhilarated. Later on, in Roman times around 25BC a man called Apicius created a collection of scripts detailing recipes prepared by wealthy Romans. In his publication, he tells us how the roman meals were split into appetizers, entrees and afters, something we still use today. He also tells us how the early Romans were skilled in the use of many aromatic flavours, including a few you will know for example thyme, fennel and dill. Later on in the 1400s, knights returning from the crusades brought us a variety of foods, spices and herbs from middle-east cuisine, including spices such as parsley and basil. The introduction of these new herbs and spices created a surge in cookery books, most of which are now in private cookery archives. The introduction of the TV brought us TV cooks and the spin-off recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everybody to access massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on our site. |
