The History of Recipes
We can track the history of written recipes far back into the distant past, in fact as far into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and maybe further still. Interesting though that maybe, mostly, these early cookbooks were just very basic hieroglyphic recipes for preparing food.
In fact, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to food historians are some ancient tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel exhilarated. Later on, there were some interesting books published in the 14th Century - a cookery book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, these books are not about the indian food that appears on menues today, but rather recipes for the types of food prepared by the cooks of the nobility of those days. For the next few years, the upper classes strove to offer the most extravagent banquests, and consequentially the best cooks and their recipes could command a high salary. Even so, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that haute cuisine and recipe publications became really popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to assembling, trying out, and writing down the recipes of their peers. By the advent of the twentieth century, cookery books are greatly in demand as a result of better eduction, people having more leisure time and having more money to spend. The introduction of the TV gave us TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of the internet, allowing us all to access thousands of recipes just like those on sites such as this. |
