The History of Recipes
Transcribed cooking instructions as a concept can be tracked back into history, in fact as far back as ancient Egypt, and potentially, even further back. Having said that, these, old records were just very basic pictorial recipes for preparing food.
In fact, the most ancient recipe found, according to experts in ancient history is a series of tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel blissful and exhilarated. Later, we have some books which were published in the 1300s : a book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, they have no connection with the curry that appears on menues today, but rather descriptions of the types of food prepared for the rich and powerful of those days. For the decades that followed, the upper-class families of Wesstern Europe strove to serve up the most extravagent meals, and as a result cooks and their collection of recipes increased in prestige. However, it was during the 19th century that formal cookery and recipe publications really came of age. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated the best years of their lives to collecting, testing, and recording recipes common in their social group. By the time we get to the 20th century, cooking books are greatly in demand mostly as a result of increased literacy, more free time and a general increase in wealth. The arrival of television brings us TV chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the internet revolution, permitting everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes such as those found on this web site. |
We hope you enjoy this 7 Layer Taco Dip recipe.
