Ingredients
1 package (8 oz.) cream cheese --
1 softened
1/3 cup sugar
1 cup (1/2 pt.) sour cream
2 tsp vanilla
1 (8 oz.) container birds eye
1 cool whip whip
1 keebler
1 fresh strawberries for
1 garnish
1 ready crust graham cracker
1 pie crust
Directions
Beat cheese until smooth; gradually beat in sugar. Blend in sour
cream and vanilla. Fold in whipped topping, blending well. Spoon
into crust. Chill until set, at least 4 hours. Garnish with fresh
strawberries if desired.

The History of Recipes
We are able to trace the history of written recipes far back into ancient history, certainly as far back into recorded history as the Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. Having said that, these, ancient cookbooks were just primitive pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe discovered, according to experts in ancient history are some tablets in Sumerian describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel blissful. As we move into Roman times 25BC a roman called Apicius created a collection of documents detailing recipes prepared by his fellow Romans. In his publication, Apicius tells us how the roman meals were split into starters, main course and desserts, a style of dining still practiced today. Aspicius informs us how the Romans used a wide range of herbs, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs such as bay, rue and asafoetida. As we move on, there were a couple of cookery books from the fourteenth century - a book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, they are unconnected to the indian curry that is popular today, but rather descriptions of the types of meals enjoyed by the nobility of that time. Later, in the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought us a variety of foods, spices and herbs from the holy lands, including spices like coriander, parsley, and rosemary. These new culinary innovations was responsible for a torrent in recipe books, many of which are now in academic collections. During the next few centuries, the rich and powerful families of the West competed to serve the best banquets, and consequentially the best chefs and their recipes increased in prestige. Notwithstanding that, it was during the nineteenth century that cookery and recipe collections rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to assembling, verifying, and publishing the recipes that were being prepared for the better households. By the advent of the 20th century, cookery books are highly popular due to better eduction, people having increased spare time and a general increase in wealth. The revolution that is television gave us TV cooks and the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everybody to search through thousands of recipes just like those on this web site. |
