The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to follow the history of written cooking instructions way back into antiquity, in truth as far back as the early Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. Having said that, these, early recipes were just basic hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing meals.
Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe discovered, according to experts are some stone tablets in Sumerian which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. As our culinary historical trip moves to more modern times we find two interesting books which date from the 14th Century : a recipe book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these books have no connection with the indian curry that is popular today, but instead descriptions of the types of food on the tables of the rich and wealthy people of that period. Over the next few centuries, the powerful and rich houses competed with each other to serve the most exotic meals, and consequentially the best cooks and their collection of recipes became highly prized. However, it wasn`t until the 19th century that cookery and recipe collections reached a high level of popularity. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, devoted much of their lives to collating, trying out, and publishing popular recipes of the day. The introduction of television gave us cooking programs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which brings us neatly up to date and the internet revolution, permitting us all to access massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on our site. |
