The History of Recipes
We are able to read the history of `recipes` far back into the distant past, at least as far as ancient Egypt, and maybe even further. Having said that, sadly, these old cookbooks were just very simple hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to academics is a series of clay tablets in Sumerian describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel wonderful and blissful. Later on, in Roman times 25BC a man called Apicius assembled a number of documents showing how to cook the recipes cooked by his fellow Romans. In his publication, Apicius tells us how the meals were divided into hors d`oeuvres, main meal and dessert, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Aspicius informs us how the Roman cooks were skilled in the use of many different herbs and spices, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs such as thyme, mint and parsley. In the fifteenth century, the Crusaders brought back a variety of foods, spices and herbs from Arab countries, including coriander, parsley, and basil. These new foods and spices caused an eruption in publications on food, the majority of which still exist in private cookery archives. By the arrival of the 1900s, recipe books are greatly in demand due to more people being able to read, more leisure time and having more disposable income. Like it or not, the introduction of television brought us TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting us all to access thousands of recipes like those on our site. |
