The History of Recipes
We are able to follow the history of written recipes way back into the distant past, at least as far into history as the early Egyptians, and maybe further still. Interesting though that is, in the main part, these early recipes were just basic hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe in existence, according to academics is a series of tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. Later on, in The time of the roman empire around 25BC a man called Apicius assembled a number of documents detailing recipes cooked by the Romans. In his works, Apicius describes how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into starters, main course and dessert, something we still use today. Additionally, he recounts how the ancient chefs made use of many herbs, including some familiar names like basil, fennel and parsley. As we move on, there are some recipe books dating from the 14th Century : a cookery book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, they are unconnected to the indian food that is familiar to us all today, but rather recipes for the types of food on the menues of the upper classes of those days. Later, in the fifteenth century, the Crusaders brought back many spices and herbs from Arab cooking, including basil and rosemary. These new foods and tastes was responsible for a torrent in recipe manuscripts, most of which still exist in private collections. The arrival of television brought us TV cookery programs and the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting us all to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on the site you are now reading. |
