The History of Recipes
Experts have found proof that recipes existed far back into history, in truth as far as pharonic Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. However, in the main part, these ancient records were just basic pictorial recipes for food preparation.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to historians are a few clay tablets in the Sumerian language which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel `blissful`. Closer to modern times, we find two interesting cookery books published in the fourteenth century : one book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, these books are unconnected to the spicy food that is popular today, but instead recipes for the types of food eaten by the wealthy. During the succeeding few centuries, the powerful and rich houses tried to lay on the most extravagent banquests, and because of this the best cooks and their collection of recipes were much in demand. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the 19th century that fine cooking and recipe collections reached a high level of popularity. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to collating, testing, and recording recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy. By the arrival of the 1900s, cook books were increasing in popularity as a result of higher levels of literacy, more leisure time and having more money. |
