The History of Recipes
Transcribed cooking instructions as an idea can be tracked back into distant history, at least as far back into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and quite possibly further than that. In practice though, mostly, these old records were just primitive hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to academics is a collection of tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. Moving our culinary historical trip onwards, there are a couple of interesting books published in the fourteenth century - a cookery book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, these two books are unconnected to the curry that is familiar to us all today, but instead descriptions of the types of meals on the tables of the nobility of the period. Over the following few centuries, the wealthy families of Wesstern Europe competed with each other to offer the most extravagent banquests, and because of this the best chefs and their recipes were at a premium. Notwithstanding that, it was during the 19th century that cooking and recipe collections became popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated their lives to collecting, testing, and writing down recipes to help cooks of their time. The arrival of TV brought us TV cookery programs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everybody to search through thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on this site. |
