Ingredients
3 cup brown sugar
3 cup margarine
6 cup oatmeal
3 cup flour
1 tbsp baking soda
2 cup chocolate chips
Directions
Put the ingredients in large bowl. Mash, squeeze, knead, etc until it
is completely blended. Form into small balls about 1 to 1 1/2 inches
in size. Place on an ungreased cookie sheet. Butter the bottom of a
small glass and dip into white sugar, then pound the cookies flat.
Bake at 350 degrees for about 10 to 12 minutes. This is a good recipe
to use when you need to get rid of some agressions because the dough
is too heavy for most mixers. So you have to use your hands and beat
it!! You can also use peanut butter or butterscotch chips or a
mixture of them.

The History of Recipes
Transcribed cooking instructions as a concept can be found back into ancient history, in truth as far back into recorded history as the early Egyptians, and maybe even further. However, in the main part, these old cookbooks were just primitive pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe found, according to Professor Solomon Katz, are some tablets in Sumerian which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel wonderful and blissful. Progressing into The time of the roman empire around 25BC a man called Apicius created some documents which described recipes prepared by his fellow Romans. In his works, he describes how the meals were split into starters, main course and afters, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. He also informs us how the Roman cooks used many herbs and spices, including some that we all recognise such as basil, mint and asafoetida. In the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought back many new foods, spices and herbs from the East, including spices such as basil and coriander. These new herbs and spices led to an increase in manuscripts on cooking, the majority of which are kept safe in private libraries. Over the following few centuries, the rich families of the West tried to serve the best banquets, and as a result chefs and their recipe collections were highly sought after. Nevertheless, it was during the nineteenth century that formal cookery and cookery books reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to collating, verifying, and recording the recipes that were being prepared for the better households. The arrival of TV brings us celebrity chefs and the spin-off recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting us all to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on our web site. |
