The History of Recipes
Written cooking instructions as an idea can be found way back into the distant past, certainly as far into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and possibly even further. Interesting though that maybe, these, old cookbooks were just primitive pictorial recipes for meal preparation.
In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe in existence, according to food historians are some clay tablets in the Sumerian language describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel blissful and exhilarated. As we move into The time of the roman empire around 25BC a man called Apicius assembled a collection of scripts describing recipes cooked by the Romans. In his works, Apicius tells us how the roman meals were separated into starters, main course and desserts, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Aspicius also tells us how the Roman cooks were skilled in the use of many different herbs, including some that we all recognise such as bay, mint and dill. Moving our culinary historical trip onwards, there are a couple of interesting recipe books published in the 1300s ; a cookery book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, they are not about the indian curry that is served today, but instead recipes for the types of meals cooked for the rich and powerful. In the 15th century, the Crusaders brought back many foods and spices from Arab cooking, including spices such as rosemary and coriander. The introduction of these new herbs and spices led to an increase in books on cooking, some of which are kept safe in private libraries. The arrival of TV brought us cooking programs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everyone to access massive numbers of recipes like those on the site you are now reading. |
