The History of Recipes
Transcribed cooking instructions as an idea can be found way back into distant history, certainly as far back into history as early Egypt, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that is, mostly, these early cook books were just simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to academics are a few stone tablets in the Sumerian language describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel blissful. Much later, in Roman times a roman called Apicius assembled a few documents detailing recipes enjoyed by wealthy roman citizens. In his scrolls, he describes how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into hors d`oeuvres, main course and afters, a style of dining still practiced today. Additionally, he describes how the Romans used many herbs, including many that are still in use today for example basil, rue and parsley. Later on, in the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought back a variety of foods and herbs from middle-east cuisine, such as basil and coriander. These new foods and tastes created a torrent in manuscripts on cooking, many of which are now in private libraries. The TV revolution brings us TV cooks and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the internet revolution, permitting everybody to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on this web site. |
