The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to trace the history of written cooking instructions way back into the far past, certainly as far as the early Egyptians, and possibly even further. Having said that, in the main part, these ancient records were just simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.
In fact, the oldest recipe in existence, according to experts is a collection of clay tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel `blissful`. Later, there are a couple of interesting recipe books which appeared in the 14th Century ; a recipe book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these two books are unconnected to the indian food that is served today, but instead descriptions of the types of meals prepared by the cooks of the rich and wealthy people of that time. For the decades that followed, the wealthy families of Europe competed with each other to lay on the most exotic meals, and as a consequence, the best cooks and their recipe collections became highly prized. However, it was during the 19th century that haute cuisine and recipe publications reached a high level of popularity. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Farmer in the US, spent years to collecting, verifying, and recording recipes that were common in the better off homes of the day. The arrival of television brought us cooking programs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everybody to access massive numbers of recipes such as those found on our site. |
