The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to prove the history of transcribed cooking instructions back into ancient history, in truth as far as pharonic Egypt, and maybe even further. In practice though, these, ancient recipes were just very basic hieroglyphic recipes for preparing meals.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to experts are a few tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel exhilarated. Closer to modern times, we have two interesting cookery books which were published in the 1300s ; a recipe book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, they are unconnected to the indian curry that is popular today, but rather accounts of the types of food prepared for the upper classes of that time. During the next few hundred years, the upper-class families of Europe tried to lay on the most extravagent meals, and as a consequence, chefs and their recipe collections were highly sought after. However, it was during the nineteenth century that fine cooking and recipe collections really came of age. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, spent years to assembling, verifying, and recording recipes common in their social group. Like it or not, the introduction of TV brings us celebrity chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everyone to access massive numbers of recipes just like those on our web site. |
