The History of Recipes
Food historians have tracked the existance of recipes back into ancient history, certainly as far as early Egypt, and maybe further still. Interesting though that maybe, sadly, these old recipes were just very simple hieroglyphic recipes for food preparation.
Interestingly, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to academics are a few ancient tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel blissful. As our culinary historical trip moves on a few more years we have a couple of cookery books which appeared in the 14th Century : a cookery book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these books have no connection with the indian food that we all know today, but instead recipes for the types of meals prepared by the chefs of the wealthy. During the succeeding few hundred years, the rich families of the West competed to lay on the most extravagent meals, and because of this the best cooks and their collection of recipes were at a premium. Even so, it wasn`t until the 1800s that haute cuisine and recipe books rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, spent years to collating, trying out, and recording the recipes of their peers. The arrival of TV brought us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everybody to search through thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on the site you are now reading. |
We hope you enjoy this Almond Crescents recipe.
