The History of Recipes
It is possible to trace the history of meal recipes far back into the distant past, at least as far as pharonic Egypt, and maybe even further. Having said that, mostly, these ancient records were just simple pictorial instructions for food preparation.
Later, we find two interesting books which were published in the 1300s - a book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, these two books have no connection with the indian food that is familiar to us all today, but instead descriptions of the types of food on the tables of the upper classes of the time. Later, in the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought us many foods and spices from Arab countries, including spices such as coriander, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new foods and spices created an explosion in recipe manuscripts, most of which are now in private collections. The arrival of television gave us cooking programs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on sites such as this. |
