The History of Recipes
Food historians have traced the existence of recipes far back into the far past, at least as far back into recorded history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and potentially, even further back. Having said that, mostly, these ancient cookbooks were just simple hieroglyphic recipes for meal preparation.
Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe found, according to academics are some stone tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel blissful and exhilarated. As we move into The time of the roman empire 25BC a roman called Apicius created a number of documents describing recipes prepared by his fellow Romans. In his publication, he recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into appetizers, main course and afters, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Additionally, he recounts how the Romans used many different aromatic flavours, including a few you will know like bay, rue and dill. In the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought back many foods and spices from the East, including spices like rosemary and coriander. The introduction of these new foods and spices led to a torrent in manuscripts on cooking, the majority of which are now in private cookery archives. By the arrival of the 20th century, cookbooks were in great demand, as a result of increased literacy, people having increased spare time and having more disposable income. The introduction of television gave us TV cookery programs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the internet revolution, permitting everyone to access thousands of recipes like those on our site. |
