The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to follow the history of recipes back into ancient history, certainly as far back into history as the early Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. In practice though, these, early recipes were just primitive pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe found, according to academics are a few stone tablets in Sumerian which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel wonderful. Closer to modern times, there were two interesting cookery books from the 14th Century : a cookery book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these are nothing to do with the indian curry that appears on menues today, but instead recipes for the types of meals prepared by the chefs of the upper classes. During the succeeding few hundred years, the upper-class families of Wesstern Europe tried to lay on the best banquets, and as a result the best cooks and their collection of recipes were much in demand. However, it wasn`t until the 1800s that cookery and recipe publications reached a high level of popularity. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to collating, trying out, and publishing recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy. By the arrival of the 1900s, cookery publications were increasing in popularity due to increased literacy, people having more spare time and having more disposable income. Like it or not, the introduction of television brings us celebrity chefs and the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing us all to search through thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
