Ingredients
1/2 cup slivered almonds, toasted
1 cup onion, finely chopped
1 each clove garlic, crushed
2 tbsp vegetable oil
8 oz tomato sauce, 1 cn
2 tsp paprika
1 tsp red chiles, ground
1/4 tsp red pepper, ground
Directions
Place almonds in food processor workbowl fitted with steel blade or in
blender container; cover and process until finely ground. Cook onion
and garlic in oil over medium heat, stirring frequently, until onion
is tender. Stir in remaining ingredients except almonds. Heat to
boiling; reduce heat. Simmer 1 minute stirring constantly; stir in
almonds. Serve hot. Makes about 1 3/4 cups of sauce.

The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to track the history of written cooking instructions back into the distant past, in truth as far back into history as the ancient Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. Having said that, these, old cook books were just basic hieroglyphic recipes for preparing meals.
Progressing into The time of the romans around 25BC a man called Apicius assembled a number of scripts which described recipes enjoyed by wealthy roman citizens. In his works, Apicius tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into appetizers, main course and desserts, something we still use today. Aspicius also informs us how the cooks of his times used a wide range of herbs, including some that we all recognise like thyme, rue and dill. During the next few hundred years, the powerful families of Wesstern Europe tried to serve the most exotic banquets, and consequentially cooks and their collection of recipes increased in prestige. Notwithstanding that, it was during the nineteenth century that fine cooking and recipe books reached a high level of popularity. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to assembling, verifying, and writing down recipes to help cooks of their time. By the time we get to the twentieth century, recipe publications were increasing in popularity mostly due to better eduction, people having more free time and a general increase in wealth. |
