The History of Recipes
It is actually possible to trace the history of written recipes way back into history, in truth as far back into recorded history as the early Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. In practice though, mostly, these early records were just very simple pictorial instructions for food preparation.
Later on, in Roman times around 25BC a man called Apicius compiled some scripts describing recipes cooked by the Romans. In his scrolls, he tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were divided into starters, entrees and afters, something that is very familiar to us today. Aspicius informs us how the Roman chefs made use of a good variety of aromatic flavors, including many that are still in use today for example thyme, mint and dill. Later on in the 1400s, knights returning from the crusades brought us many foods and herbs from middle-east cuisine, including coriander, parsley, and basil. These new foods and spices was responsible for an outbreak in manuscripts on cookery, some of which are now in academic collections. The introduction of the TV brought us cooking programs and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing us all to search through massive numbers of recipes such as those found on sites such as this. |
We hope you enjoy this Almond Red Sauce recipe.
