The History of Recipes
Historians have tracked the existance of recipes way back into distant history, in truth as far back as the ancient Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that is, these, old records were just basic hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for food preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to experts is a series of stone tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel wonderful. As we move into The time of the romans around 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a collection of scripts showing how to cook the recipes prepared by wealthy Romans. In his works, Apicius tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into hors d`oeuvres, main meal and afters, something that is very familiar to us today. Additionally, he tells us how the ancient chefs used many aromatic flavours, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks for example bay, fennel and asafoetida. During the next few centuries, the wealthy families of the West strove to lay on the most extravagent meals, and as a consequence, the best chefs and their recipe collections became highly prized. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the 19th century that cooking and recipe publications really came of age. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated their lives to collating, trying out, and publishing the recipes of their peers. The revolution that is television brought us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to search through thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on our site. |
