The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to follow the history of written cooking instructions way back into the far past, in fact as far back as the early Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that is, sadly, these ancient recipes were just very basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.
As we move into The time of the romans 25BC a roman called Apicius assembled a collection of scripts showing how to cook the recipes cooked by his fellow Romans. In his scrolls, he describes how the meals were separated into appetizers, main course and afters, something we still use today. Aspicius informs us how the ancient cooks used many aromatic flavors, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens such as bay, mint and parsley. During the succeeding few centuries, the upper-class families of Wesstern Europe strove to offer the most exotic banquets, and as a consequence, the best chefs and their recipe collections could command a high salary. However, it was during the nineteenth century that formal cookery and recipe books really came of age. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to collating, trying out, and recording the recipes that were being prepared for the better households. Like it or not, the introduction of TV brings us TV chefs and the accompanying recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing us all to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
We hope you enjoy this Aloha Salad recipe.
