The History of Recipes
Recipes as a concept can be found far back into the far past, at least as far into history as ancient Egypt, and maybe further still. Interesting though that is, sadly, these ancient cookbooks were just very basic hieroglyphic instructions for preparing meals.
In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe discovered, according to experts in ancient history is a series of stone tablets in ancient Sumerian which show the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. Progressing into Roman times 25BC a roman called Apicius created a number of documents detailing recipes cooked by his fellow Romans. He recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into appetizers, main course and dessert, something we still use today. Aspicius tells us how the cooks of his times used a good variety of herbs and spices, including some familiar names like thyme, fennel and asafoetida. Later on, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought back many foods and herbs from the holy lands, including coriander, basil and rosemary. These new foods and tastes led to a torrent in recipe publications, most of which still exist in private cookery archives. When we get to the twentieth century, cookbooks were in great demand, mostly as a result of better eduction, people having more spare time and a general increase in wealth. The TV revolution gave us TV cookery programs and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everyone to access thousands of recipes such as those found on our site. |
