The History of Recipes
Experts have proved the existence of recipes way back into antiquity, in truth as far back into recorded history as the ancient Egyptians, and possibly even further. However, these, early cook books were just very simple hieroglyphic instructions for preparing meals.
As our culinary historical trip moves on a few more years there were a couple of interesting cookery books which date from the 1300s : a recipe book called `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, these two books are unconnected to the spicy food that is familiar to us all today, but rather accounts of the types of food cooked for the rich and powerful of that time. In the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought us many new spices and herbs from Arab cuisine, such as coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new foods and spices led to an eruption in manuscripts on cookery, many of which still exist in private libraries. The introduction of television brings us celebrity chefs and the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everyone to access massive numbers of recipes just like those on sites such as this. |
