The History of Recipes
We can read the history of meal recipes way back into ancient history, certainly as far into history as the ancient Egyptians, and maybe even further. Interesting though that is, these, old cook books were just very basic hieroglyphic recipes for preparing meals.
In fact, the oldest recipe discovered, according to experts are some clay tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel blissful and exhilarated. Later on, in Roman times around 25BC a man called Apicius compiled some documents describing recipes cooked by wealthy roman citizens. In his works, Apicius recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into appetizers, entrees and afters, a style of dining still practiced today. This early Roman chef informs us how the ancient cooks used many herbs, including some that we all recognise for example basil, mint and dill. Later on, we have a couple of interesting recipe books which date from the 1300s - a recipe book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, these two books are nothing to do with the curry that is popular today, but rather accounts of the types of meals prepared for the rich and powerful. Later on in the 1400s, knights returning from the crusades brought us many spices and herbs from the holy lands, including spices such as coriander, parsley, and rosemary. The introduction of these new culinary ideas led to a surge in manuscripts on food, many of which are now in private cookery archives. The introduction of the TV brought us cooking programs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of the internet, allowing us all to search through thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on the site you are now reading. |
We hope you enjoy this Amaretto Cafi (Italian Coffee) recipe.
