The History of Recipes
Transcribed cooking instructions as an idea can be observed way back into the distant past, certainly as far back as the ancient Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. Having said that, mostly, these early cook books were just simple hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to academics is a collection of ancient tablets in Sumerian which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. Moving on, there were a couple of books from the 1300s : a cookery book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, they are nothing to do with the curry that is served today, but instead descriptions of the types of food on the menues of the rich people of that period. During the following few centuries, the upper classes strove to serve the best banquets, and consequentially chefs and their collection of recipes were much in demand. Notwithstanding that, it was during the 1800s that fine cookery and cookery books reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to assembling, testing, and recording popular recipes of the day. The revolution that is television gave us TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everyone to search through thousands of recipes just like those on this web site. |
