The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to prove the history of transcribed cooking instructions back into the distant past, in fact as far back as pharonic Egypt, and maybe even further. Interesting though that is, generally, these old recipes were just simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for food preparation.
In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe discovered, according to academics is a series of tablets in the Sumerian language which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel blissful. Later on, in The time of the romans 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a few documents describing recipes prepared by wealthy roman citizens. In his scrolls, he tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into starters, main course and dessert, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. He also tells us how the Roman cooks made use of many spices and herbs, including some that we all recognise like thyme, fennel and asafoetida. Continuing our culinary historical journey, there are a couple of interesting books which were published in the 14th Century ; a cookery book called `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, they are not about the indian food that is served today, but instead accounts of the types of meals on the menues of the rich and powerful of the time. Later on, in the 15th century, the Crusaders brought back many foods and herbs from the holy land, such as rosemary and coriander. The introduction of these new culinary ideas was responsible for an increase in publications on food, the majority of which are kept safe in private libraries. The TV revolution brought us TV cookery programs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on this site. |
