The History of Recipes
Historians have proved the existence of recipes back into distant history, at least as far as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and possibly even further. Interesting though that maybe, generally, these old cook books were just simple pictorial recipes for preparing food.
Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe found, according to historians is a series of clay tablets in ancient Sumerian which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel blissful and exhilarated. Progressing into The time of the romans 25BC a Roman scholar, called Apicius, assembled some scrolls describing recipes enjoyed by the Romans. In his scrolls, he describes how the roman meals were split into starters, entrees and desserts, something that is very familiar to us today. Aspicius describes how the Roman cooks made use of a good variety of spices and herbs, including some familiar names for example basil, mint and dill. As our culinary historical trip moves to more modern times there are two interesting books published in the 1300s ; one book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, they are nothing to do with the indian curry that appears on menues today, but instead accounts of the types of food prepared by the chefs of the upper classes of that time. In the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought us many foods and spices from the East, such as parsley and basil. These new spices and herbs was responsible for a surge in books on cookery, some of which are kept safe in private cookery archives. The introduction of television brought us cooking programs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting us all to search through massive numbers of recipes such as those found on this recipe site. |
