The History of Recipes
Written recipes as an idea can be found far back into the far past, at least as far back as the Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. In practice though, in the main part, these ancient cook books were just simple hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
During the time of the Romans a roman called Apicius created a number of documents detailing recipes enjoyed by his fellow Romans. In his publication, Apicius tells us how the roman meals were separated into appetizers, main course and dessert, something that is very familiar to us today. Aspicius also tells us how the ancient Romans used many herbs, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks like thyme, mint and parsley. Later on, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought back a variety of foods, spices and herbs from the Middle-East, including spices like parsley and basil. The introduction of these new tastes created an increase in recipe publications, some of which are now in private cookery archives. When we get to the 20th century, cookbooks were highly popular due to increased literacy, people having increased free time and being a little richer. |
