The History of Recipes
Experts have proved the existance of recipes back into ancient history, at least as far back as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that maybe, these, old records were just very simple hieroglyphic instructions for meal preparation.
Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe discovered, according to academics are a few stone tablets in the Sumerian language which describe the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel blissful and exhilarated. As our culinary historical trip moves on a few more years we have two recipe books published in the fourteenth century ; a cookery book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, these books are nothing to do with the indian food that is familiar to us all today, but instead recipes for the types of meals on the menues of the rich people of the period. In the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought back many foods and spices from the holy lands, including spices like parsley and basil. The introduction of these new herbs and spices caused a surge in recipe publications, most of which are now in private libraries. Over the following few hundred years, the rich families of the West competed to serve up the most extravagent banquests, and consequentially the best chefs and their recipe collections were much in demand. Even so, it wasn`t until the 1800s that haute cuisine and recipe books rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to assembling, trying out, and publishing recipes of the day. Like it or not, the introduction of television brings us TV cookery programs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everybody to access thousands of recipes like those on our site. |
