The History of Recipes
Transcribed cooking instructions as an idea can be tracked way back into distant history, in truth as far as the ancient Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that maybe, in the main part, these early recipes were just basic pictorial recipes for meal preparation.
In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to food historians are some ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel blissful and exhilarated. Much later, in Roman times a roman called Apicius created a few scripts showing how to cook the recipes cooked by wealthy Romans. In his works, he describes how the meals were split into hors d`oeuvre, main meal and afters, something that is very familiar to us today. Aspicius tells us how the ancient cooks were skilled in the use of many different spices and herbs, including some that we all recognise for example basil, fennel and parsley. Over the succeeding few hundred years, the families of Europe strove to serve up the most extravagent banquests, and as a consequence, the best cooks and their collection of recipes were at a premium. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the 19th century that formal cookery and recipe publications really came of age. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, spent years to assembling, testing, and recording recipes of the day. The TV revolution gave us TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing us all to access thousands of recipes like those on this site. |
