The History of Recipes
We are able to trace the history of `recipes` back into history, in truth as far into history as the early Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. Having said that, sadly, these old recipes were just very basic hieroglyphic recipes for preparing meals.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to historians are some ancient tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel wonderful and blissful. As we move into Roman times around 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote a collection of documents showing how to cook the recipes enjoyed by his fellow Romans. In his works, Apicius tells us how the roman meals were separated into hors d`oeuvres, main meal and desserts, a very modern way of dining. Aspicius also informs us how the cooks of his times were skilled in the use of many aromatic flavors, including some familiar names such as thyme, rue and parsley. Later, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought back a variety of foods, spices and herbs from middle-east cuisine, including spices like coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new herbs and spices caused an explosion in books on cookery, the majority of which are now in private cookery archives. By the advent of the 1900s, cookbooks are greatly in demand due to higher levels of literacy, people having increased spare time and having more money. The revolution that is television gave us TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everyone to access massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on sites such as this. |
