The History of Recipes
Historians have tracked the existence of recipes far back into antiquity, certainly as far into history as ancient Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that maybe, sadly, these ancient cook books were just simple hieroglyphic recipes for meal preparation.
Later on, there were a couple of recipe books which date from the 14th Century : a recipe book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these books are nothing to do with the indian curry that is served today, but rather descriptions of the types of meals on the tables of the rich and powerful. Later on in the 1400s, people returning from the crusades brought us a variety of spices and herbs from the Middle-East, including parsley, basil and rosemary. These new foods and tastes created an outbreak in books on cookery, the majority of which still exist in academic collections. The introduction of the TV gave us TV cooks and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing us all to access massive numbers of recipes like those on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
