The History of Recipes
Experts have found proof that recipes existed back into history, in truth as far back into recorded history as ancient Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that is, mostly, these early recipes were just very simple hieroglyphic instructions for meal preparation.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe found, according to Professor Solomon Katz, is a series of clay tablets in Sumerian which describe the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel `blissful`. Closer to modern times, there are a couple of interesting cookery books which appeared in the fourteenth century ; a recipe book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these two books are nothing to do with the spicy food that is popular today, but instead accounts of the types of meals prepared by the cooks of the rich. During the succeeding few centuries, the wealthy families of the West tried to serve the most exotic meals, and as a result the best cooks and their recipe collections were highly sought after. However, it was during the 1800s that fine cooking and recipe collections reached a high level of popularity. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, devoted much of their lives to collating, verifying, and writing down popular recipes of the day. By the arrival of the 1900s, cooking books were increasing in popularity mostly as a result of increased literacy, more leisure time and being a little richer. |
