The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to trace the history of written cooking instructions way back into the distant past, in truth as far into history as ancient Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. In practice though, generally, these early records were just primitive pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing food.
In fact, the oldest recipe in existence, according to experts are a few ancient tablets in the Sumerian language describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel wonderful. Later on, there are two recipe books from the 14th Century ; a recipe book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, these books are not about the indian food that is served today, but instead accounts of the types of meals on the menus of the rich and powerful of those days. Later on in the 1400s, the Crusaders brought back a variety of foods, spices and herbs from Arab countries, such as basil and coriander. The introduction of these new culinary ideas created an increase in recipe publications, some of which are kept safe in private libraries. For the next few years, the wealthy families of the West competed to serve up the best banquets, and as a consequence, cooks and their recipe collections became highly prized. However, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that haute cuisine and recipe publications reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Farmer in the US, spent years to collating, verifying, and publishing the recipes of their peers. By the advent of the twentieth century, cooking books were highly popular due to more people being able to read, more free time and disposable income. The introduction of the TV brought us TV cooks and the spin-off recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everybody to access thousands of recipes like those on our web site. |
