The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to prove the history of recipes way back into distant history, in fact as far back as the early Egyptians, and maybe further still. Interesting though that maybe, mostly, these early cook books were just primitive hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for food preparation.
In fact, the oldest recipe found, according to historians is a series of ancient tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel `blissful`. Later, there were two recipe books dating from the 14th Century : one book called `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, these have no connection with the indian curry that appears on menues today, but instead accounts of the types of meals on the tables of the rich and powerful of the time. For the decades that followed, the upper-class families of Wesstern Europe competed to offer the most exotic banquets, and as a result cooks and their collection of recipes were greatly in demand. However, it wasn`t until the 1800s that cookery and recipe publications became popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted much of their lives to collecting, testing, and writing down the recipes of their peers. By the time we get to the 1900s, cookery publications were in great demand, due to increased literacy, more free time and having more money. |
