The History of Recipes
It is possible to track the history of `recipes` far back into history, certainly as far back into recorded history as the ancient Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that maybe, mostly, these old records were just very simple pictorial instructions for meal preparation.
In fact, the oldest recipe found, according to food historians are some stone tablets in the Sumerian language describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel `wonderful`. Later on, in The time of the romans around 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote a number of scripts detailing recipes enjoyed by wealthy Romans. In his works, Apicius tells us how the roman meals were divided into hors d`oeuvres, entrees and desserts, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Aspicius also describes how the Roman cooks made use of a good variety of aromatic flavors, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks for example bay, mint and parsley. For the decades that followed, the powerful and rich houses competed to serve the most exotic banquets, and as a result the best chefs and their recipe collections could command a high salary. Even so, it wasn`t until the 1800s that fine cooking and cookery books became really popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to collecting, trying out, and publishing recipes of the day. The arrival of television gave us TV cooks and the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes such as those found on sites such as this. |
