The History of Recipes
Written cooking instructions as an idea can be traced way back into distant history, in fact as far into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and potentially, even further back. In practice though, generally, these old recipes were just basic hieroglyphic recipes for preparing meals.
As we move into The time of the roman empire around 25BC a roman called Apicius assembled a number of documents showing how to cook the recipes cooked by wealthy Romans. He recounts how the roman meals were separated into appetizers, main course and desserts, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Additionally, he informs us how the ancient chefs used a wide range of spices and herbs, including some familiar names like basil, fennel and asafoetida. Over the following few centuries, the upper-class families of the West strove to serve up the most extravagent banquests, and consequentially the best chefs and their recipe collections were at a premium. Notwithstanding that, it was during the nineteenth century that fine cooking and cookery books rose to prominence. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated their lives to assembling, testing, and writing down recipes that were common in the better off homes of the day. The arrival of TV brings us TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of the internet, permitting us all to search through thousands of recipes just like those on this site. |
We hope you enjoy this Apple Pie (No Sugar) recipe.
