The History of Recipes
We can follow the history of meal recipes back into ancient history, certainly as far back into history as the ancient Egyptians, and maybe further still. Interesting though that is, mostly, these ancient recipes were just primitive pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
In fact, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to historians is a collection of stone tablets in the Sumerian language which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel blissful. Progressing into The time of the roman empire 25BC a man called Apicius created a number of scripts detailing recipes enjoyed by wealthy roman citizens. In his works, he recounts how the meals were separated into starters, main meal and dessert, something that is very familiar to us today. Additionally, he informs us how the Roman chefs made use of many aromatic flavours, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens for example basil, mint and dill. Later, we have a couple of recipe books which date from the 14th Century ; one book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, they have no connection with the indian food that appears on menues today, but instead recipes for the types of meals eaten by the rich and wealthy people of that period. Later on in the 1400s, knights returning from the crusades brought back a variety of spices and herbs from Arab cuisine, including rosemary and coriander. These new foods and tastes was responsible for an explosion in recipe manuscripts, some of which are kept safe in private libraries. The introduction of the TV brings us TV cooks and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing us all to search through thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
We hope you enjoy this Apple Pie (No Sugar) recipe.
