The History of Recipes
Experts have proved the existance of recipes far back into ancient history, in truth as far back as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and maybe further still. In practice though, these, old records were just very basic hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.
Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to historians is a collection of tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel `blissful`. As our culinary historical trip moves on a few more years there were two books published in the 14th Century : one book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, these two books are not about the curry that is served today, but instead accounts of the types of food enjoyed by the rich and powerful of that time. Over the following few hundred years, the rich and powerful families of the West tried to offer the most extravagent banquests, and as a consequence, the best cooks and their collection of recipes were greatly in demand. However, it was during the nineteenth century that formal cookery and cookery books rose to prominence. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, spent years to collecting, testing, and writing down the recipes of their peers. By the arrival of the 20th century, cookery books are starting to become popular as a result of more people being able to read, more leisure time and having more money. |
