The History of Recipes
It is possible to follow the history of written recipes back into the far past, in truth as far back into history as the early Egyptians, and possibly even further. Interesting though that is, in the main part, these ancient records were just basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for food preparation.
In fact, the most ancient recipe found, according to Professor Solomon Katz, are some tablets in the Sumerian language which describe the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel blissful and exhilarated. Later on, we have a couple of interesting cookery books from the 1300s - one book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, they are not about the spicy food that we all know today, but rather descriptions of the types of food on the menus of the nobility of that period. For the centuries that followed, the rich families of Wesstern Europe tried to serve up the best banquets, and as a result cooks and their recipes were greatly in demand. However, it was during the nineteenth century the formal cooking and cookery books really came of age. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to collecting, trying out, and recording recipes to help cooks of their time. By the time we get to the 20th century, cooking publications are increasing in popularity due to increased literacy, more free time and being a little richer. The introduction of the TV brings us celebrity chefs and the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the internet revolution, allowing everybody to search through thousands of recipes such as those found on sites such as this. |
We hope you enjoy this Apple & Grape Salad recipe.
