The History of Recipes
Historians have traced the existance of recipes way back into ancient history, certainly as far into history as the ancient Egyptians, and maybe even further. Interesting though that is, these, ancient records were just very basic pictorial instructions for preparing food.
Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to experts in ancient history is a series of ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel blissful. As our culinary historical trip moves on a few more years we have a couple of interesting recipe books which date from the 1300s ; a book called `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, these two books are not about the indian curry that is familiar to us all today, but rather descriptions of the types of meals on the menus of the rich. Over the following few hundred years, the rich families of Europe competed with each other to lay on the most exotic meals, and because of this chefs and their recipe collections increased in prestige. However, it was during the nineteenth century that fine cooking and recipe books became really popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated years of their lives to assembling, trying out, and recording recipes to help cooks of their time. Like it or not, the introduction of television brought us cooking programs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the internet revolution, allowing us all to search through thousands of recipes like those on sites such as this. |
