The History of Recipes
Written recipes as a concept can be observed way back into distant history, at least as far back into history as ancient Egypt, and maybe even further. However, sadly, these early cookbooks were just basic hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for food preparation.
In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe discovered, according to experts in ancient history are some tablets in the Sumerian language describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel blissful. Later, we have two interesting books dating from the 1300s ; one book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, these two books are nothing to do with the spicy food that we all know today, but rather accounts of the types of food prepared by the cooks of the rich people of that period. For the decades that followed, the rich families of Wesstern Europe competed with each other to serve the most exotic banquets, and as a consequence, chefs and their recipe collections were greatly in demand. Even so, it was during the 1800s the formal cooking and recipe books rose to prominence. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to assembling, testing, and publishing recipes of the day. By the time we get to the 20th century, cooking publications are in high demand, due to more people being able to read, leisure time and being a little richer. The arrival of television brings us cooking programs and the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everybody to search through thousands of recipes just like those on this site. |
