The History of Recipes
It is possible to follow the history of meal recipes back into history, certainly as far into history as the Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that maybe, sadly, these old recipes were just very basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe discovered, according to experts are some ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. Moving our culinary historical trip onwards, we find two recipe books dating from the fourteenth century ; a recipe book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these books have no connection with the indian food that we all know today, but instead accounts of the types of food on the menus of the rich and wealthy people of the time. Over the succeeding few centuries, the powerful and wealthy houses competed to offer the most exotic banquets, and consequentially the best cooks and their recipe collections were highly sought after. However, it wasn`t until the 19th century that fine cookery and cookery books reached a high level of popularity. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated years of their lives to collecting, trying out, and publishing recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy. The arrival of TV gave us TV cookery programs and the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to search through thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
We hope you enjoy this Apple Cider Salad recipe.
