The History of Recipes
Historians have proved the existance of recipes back into ancient history, in fact as far back into recorded history as the Egyptians, and maybe even further. Having said that, sadly, these early records were just simple hieroglyphic instructions for preparing food.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to experts are a few clay tablets in Sumerian describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel exhilarated. As our culinary historical trip moves on a few more years we have a couple of books from the 1300s ; a recipe book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, they are nothing to do with the curry that appears on menues today, but rather accounts of the types of food prepared by the chefs of the rich. During the succeeding few hundred years, the upper-class families of Europe strove to lay on the best banquets, and consequentially chefs and their recipe collections were highly sought after. Nevertheless, it was during the 1800s that formal cookery and recipe publications became really popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, devoted much of their lives to collecting, testing, and writing down the recipes that were being prepared for the better households. Like it or not, the introduction of television brings us celebrity TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everyone to access massive numbers of recipes such as those found on this recipe site. |
