The History of Recipes
We can track the history of meal recipes back into the distant past, certainly as far into history as the Egyptians, and maybe even further. Interesting though that maybe, generally, these old recipes were just simple pictorial recipes for preparing food.
Interestingly, the oldest recipe in existence, according to experts are a few stone tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. Progressing into The time of the romans around 25BC a man called Apicius created some documents detailing recipes enjoyed by wealthy Romans. In his scrolls, he describes how the meals were separated into appetizers, main meal and dessert, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. This early Roman chef informs us how the Roman chefs were skilled in the use of many herbs, including some that we all recognise for example thyme, mint and parsley. Moving on, we have a couple of recipe books which date from the 14th Century : a recipe book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these two books are unconnected to the indian food that is served today, but rather descriptions of the types of meals eaten by the rich and powerful of that time. Later, in the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought back a variety of spices and herbs from Arab cooking, including basil and rosemary. These new foods and tastes created an eruption in recipe publications, the majority of which still exist in academic collections. By the time we get to the twentieth century, cooking publications were highly popular mostly due to more people being able to read, people having more leisure time and disposable income. Like it or not, the introduction of TV brings us TV cooks and the accompanying recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing us all to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on this web site. |
