The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to prove the history of recipes far back into the far past, in fact as far as the Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. Having said that, sadly, these old cookbooks were just very simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to experts is a series of ancient tablets in Sumerian which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel `blissful`. During Roman times 25BC a roman called Apicius created some documents showing how to cook the recipes prepared by the Romans. In his works, Apicius tells us how the meals were divided into hors d`oeuvres, main meal and desserts, something we still use today. Additionally, he tells us how the Roman cooks were skilled in the use of a wide range of aromatic flavors, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs for example thyme, mint and asafoetida. During the succeeding few centuries, the powerful and rich strove to lay on the best banquets, and because of this the best chefs and their collection of recipes became highly prized. Even so, it wasn`t until the 19th century that fine cooking and recipe collections really came of age. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, spent years to assembling, trying out, and publishing recipes of the day. Like it or not, the introduction of TV gave us celebrity TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to access massive numbers of recipes just like those on sites such as this. |
