The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to track the history of transcribed cooking instructions way back into the distant past, in truth as far back into history as early Egypt, and potentially, even further back. Having said that, sadly, these old recipes were just simple pictorial instructions for preparing meals.
Closer to modern times, we have a couple of interesting recipe books which date from the 14th Century : a book called `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, they are unconnected to the indian curry that appears on menues today, but instead descriptions of the types of food prepared for the rich people of that period. In the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought us many spices and herbs from the holy lands, such as basil and rosemary. These new spices and herbs was responsible for an eruption in books on cooking, some of which are now in academic collections. Like it or not, the introduction of television brought us cooking programs and the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everybody to search through thousands of recipes like those on sites such as this. |
We hope you enjoy this Applesauce Bread recipe.
