The History of Recipes
Written cooking instructions as an idea can be traced back into ancient history, at least as far back into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and quite possibly further than that. Having said that, in the main part, these early cookbooks were just very simple pictorial instructions for preparing food.
As our culinary historical trip moves on a few more years there are some recipe books which were published in the 14th Century : one book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these two books are unconnected to the curry that appears on menues today, but instead recipes for the types of food prepared by the chefs of the nobility of that time. In the fifteenth century, the Crusaders brought back many foods and herbs from the East, such as basil and rosemary. These new herbs and spices led to an eruption in manuscripts on food, some of which are now in private collections. Like it or not, the introduction of television brought us TV cookery programs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everyone to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on this site. |
We hope you enjoy this Applesauce Bread recipe.
