The History of Recipes
We are able to read the history of `recipes` back into history, in fact as far as ancient Egypt, and maybe further still. Having said that, sadly, these ancient recipes were just basic hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
As we move into The time of the romans around 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a number of scripts showing how to cook the recipes prepared by the Romans. In his publication, he recounts how the roman meals were divided into appetizers, main course and dessert, something that is very familiar to us today. Aspicius also informs us how the early Romans were skilled in the use of many different spices, including a few you will know like bay, fennel and parsley. Later, in the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought us many new spices and herbs from the holy lands, including coriander, basil and rosemary. These new spices and herbs led to a torrent in recipe manuscripts, some of which are now in academic collections. The revolution that is television brought us celebrity TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everybody to access massive numbers of recipes like those on this recipe site. |
